Lyla's owner thought they knew what they were taking on:
I had been warned about the barking, whining and constant shadowing. I was prepared for the boundless energy and brains. I wasn't prepared however for the morning ritual of being full-body pinned to the bed by a 30kg slobber monster and having my face thoroughly washed before being fully awake.
Lyla is on page 63. Every dog in this book gets a page like that: a portrait, a title and a few lines from the people who know them best. Hermi, "Mr Big Barks", ball firmly in mouth. Cherokee, Chez for short, who will play tug with anything. Putney, "Black Velvet", the social butterfly of the dog park. Tilly, a rescue her family says has changed their lives. And Jesse, whose page puts it plainly: "German Shepherd Rescue Victoria came to my aid and helped me find my forever family."
The book was made to celebrate these dogs and to give back to that rescue. It took over four years, it holds more than 200 German Shepherds, and so far it has raised over $22,000 for the rescue. Every copy sold keeps that going. The cover says as much, under a German Shepherd puppy with its head on a tilt: "Proudly Supporting German Shepherd Rescue Victoria".
It is a big book, about the size of a vinyl record sleeve, in hardcover and full colour throughout, with a green spine and a green ribbon to keep your place. On the back, a Shepherd runs through shallow water.
If someone you love has ever loved a German Shepherd, give them this one, and watch them go looking for the dog that looks like theirs.
From an owner photographed for the book
Took up an amazing opportunity to participate in the book German Shepherds of Australia and raise money for German Shepherd Rescue Victoria. From the model interview right through to the photo shoot Simon and his team were a pleasure to work with, both Kaden and I had lots of fun during the photo shoot. The photos are absolutely stunning and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product of the book. Thank You
Kaitlin H.
